We recently saw the results of another study that reveals one of the many benefits of meditation. A reduced number of deaths due to heart disease was reported in a study conducted by the Medical College of Wisconsin. The study was about the effects of transcendental meditation and it was funded by the Maharishi University in Iowa.

Two groups were studied for nine years. One group was told to meditate for 20 minutes two times per day. The second group did not meditate but were given instructions on making lifestyle changes following traditional ways to lower a person’s chances of getting heart disease.

At the end of the study, the group that meditated had 47 percent fewer strokes, heart attacks and deaths than didn’t meditate.

Despite the fact that this study was based on people doing transcendental meditation, we feel that the use of Holosync CDs and similar brain wave technology would probably produce similar results. What do you think?

Of course you know that meditation is good for you. It’s been proven that people who meditate on a regular basis are healthier of both mind and body.

Today I came across some useful information about other things in addition to meditation that you can do to encourage brain wellness. These are tips for improving memory and concentration.

Feed your head. It’s true that fish is brain food. Fish fats that have a lot of DHA and omega 3 essential fatty acids are especially good. Besides salmon and tuna, cashews and almonds are also excellent brain foods.

Do puzzles. They exercise your brain just as pumping iron builds better biceps. Sudoku and crossword puzzles are more than just time wasters!

Watch out for cigarettes, whiskey and wild wild women. Actually, that’s more poetic than true. Fact is, alcohol, nicotine and caffeine have negative impacts on brain functions.

Catch enough z’s. Eight hours of sleep are recommended for maximum power of concentration.

Yoga. Say no more. It’s been around forever, because it’s unmatched in its mind-conditioning power.

And, of course, meditation. Meditating is one of the best known ways to lower your stress level, and too much stress can literally be fatal.

As the world around us becomes more stressful, people at last seem to be waking up to the fact that meditation is a good way to relieve that stress. Of course, meditation is anything but new, but what is news is the rising number of people interested in meditation, especially in the USA. Maybe it’s a defense mechanism to keep us from going berserk from all of the pressures that modern living is piling upon us.

Anyway, there was a new study by a psychology professor in the UK that revealed just how beneficial meditation is. Professor Julie Barlow, from the Health Psychology department of Coventry University suggests that just one hour of meditation is as good for you as eight hours of sleep.

We read about the study on the Mlive.com website, where several faithful followers of meditation told about the benefits they received from meditating on a regular basis.

One practitioner in Michigan, Steve Sampson, who has been doing meditation for more than ten years said that it “helps us to distance ourselves emotionally from demands we might find stressful.” He explained that we can feel as if we are more in control of stressful situations if we do not feel we must react to them instantly. Meditation, he said, reminds us that nothing is permanent because everything comes and goes, just like breathing in and out.

At one time there was a misconception about people who meditate — that they were all hippies who wore Birkenstocks and ate granola. But there are all kinds of diverse people in the Mindfulness Meditation Community where Sampson teaches. They range in age from 20s to 60s, and their professions range from a general contractor to a physics teacher.

A Sufi dancer, Catherine Sugas, said that meditation “frees you from negative thoughts and depression, lowers blood pressure, and taps into energy sources within the body.”

Barb Meconis, a nurse said that meditation can be done anywhere once people develop an understanding of how to do it. “A walk in the woods focusing on the leaves is also a form of mindful meditation,” she says. “Observing the colors or maybe the way the leaves shift in the wind allows your mind to quiet itself.” She said meditation is as important as eating breakfast, so everyone should do it on a daily basis.

See you again soon…
